Other members of The Banks’ include Will’s arrogant cousin Carlton Banks (Karyn Parsons), his cute-looking but dull-witted cousin Ashley Banks (Tatyana Ali), his youngest cousin, and the family’s cynical butler called Geoffrey.Īs Will struggles to settle into his new home, the class divide is evident. There’s also Vivian Banks (played by Janet Hubert and later by Daphne Reid), Will’s equally-strict career-minded aunt who works as a university professor. Will’s wealthy family includes his strict uncle Philip Banks (played by James Avery), a successful attorney who later works as a judge. After Smith’s mother is involved in a scuffle with thugs on the basketball court, she sends her son to live with her wealthy relatives in the affluent Los Angeles neighborhood of Bel-Air. The Fresh Prince storyline follows Will Smith (played by Will Smith), a street-smart teenager from West Philadelphia.

It was loosely inspired by Medina’s life. The sitcom was created by Andy and Susan Borowitz, and developed by Benny Medina and Jeff Pollack. One of my favorite albums of all time. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is an American television sitcom starring Will Smith, James Avery, Janet-Hubert-Whitten, Alfonso Ribeiro, and a couple of other stars. It has a narrative throughout that is unbelievable. MF Doom and Mad Lib said we're going to make the album on our terms and we're going to lean into different sonic palettes that you haven't heard before. It changed the way I view art because it challenged convention. And every time I listen to it, still to this day, I can play it and it feels like the first time I was listening to it.

I was just like, It's really interesting. Like, that's what I was listening to and all of a sudden I hear this really obscure record with this guy with the mask on the cover I'm like, What the hell is this? The first time I listened to it I didn't know what to do with it. I grew up on Dipset, Cam'ron, Roc-A-Fella, Freeway, Peedi Crakk, State Property, Beans. But yeah, Madvillainy, I'd never heard hip-hop like that before. There's actually an MF Doom Easter egg in Bel-Air - R.I.P.

I think people say that a lot, but that album changed my life.
